Spelling Variant(s) of the "Kerr" Surname

Spelling was just not a big deal to our ancestors. In many old documents I find the same surname spelled different ways. So we will gather Kerr and any variants. I am starting a list here. But if I miss one, feel free to add it.

Does anyone have any information on Alexander Kerr. Born in 1829 in NC according to Census data. I'm looking for his parents.

Also, I'm looking for Earl Frank Kerr's 1940 census data. I suspect he was in Arkansas or Louisiana. His wife was Geneva/Jeannie/Jennie Everett Kerr/

HI Laura,

I would like to join the one name study. My mother is a Kerr, descended from Edward lee, Edward Lawrence, John William then Robert Kerr and Barbara (barbary) Warlick. They married 7 May 1817 in Tryon, Lincoln County, North Carolina. Andrew Kerr has long been proposed as his father, but I haven't found "that" piece of proof. Thanks, Marci Delaney

Marci the Kerr study is open to anyone with Kerr, Ker, Carr, Car and other name variants. Please add your name to the list above... Look under the heading: How to Join

Then feel free to add your Kerr related profiles to the lists by time above.

Welcome to the Study!

I would like to join this study to continue my research of my Kerr relatives. My mother's maiden name is Kerr. I have traced her line back to a Gustavus Kerr/Ker (1685-1755) from Aberdeen Scotland. He immigrated to the USA with his wife Janet Allen/Allan and many of their children. The Family Centre in Edinburgh this past summer 2019 located a birth record for his son Robert (my direct ancestor) but said the name Gustavus was not Scottish and since Aberdeen was a sea/trading port he most likely came in through some sort of trade. They said the name was of Nordic roots, probably from Norway. I have not had any success tracing where he may have come from. Would love to collaborate with others near and far.
Hi Amy, for some reason I did not get an email that you posted. Need to figure out why...

Anyway, the page is open so you can post info on it. Welcome aboard! I recently took over this One Name Study so maybe the notice went to the former PM?

Amy what I have uncovered is that the du Kerr's (later Kerr) came from Norway to Scotland in the 1300's. There were 2 brothers that came. I have pieced together they may have come with others possibly as raiders as they quickly took over land and moved up in Scottish society. So it's entirely possible your family member was given a Nordic name as a tribute to the Kerr heritage.

Interesting. Would love to see the details of the two brothers (if you have it built oh here). And, I never thought about the name being a tribute versus him not born in Scotland. Thanks!
This is a good source of some information. https://www.clankerr.co.uk/ferniehirst%20book/book%20timeline.html

I am still looking to find the information about the 2 brother factions from Norway. They became Cessford's and Ferniehirst's ultimately.

I seek information regarding a William Kerr and his wife Margaret Jane Miller. They were married in Pennsylvania in the late 1700's. They both passed in 1850 in Indiana. It is believed that they were related to the Moore family with whom they were neighbors in Pennsylvania. HELP

I have some information. William Kerr is the brother of my gggfather James Kerr I believe. They both are buried in and around Noblesville Indiana. Mount Pleasant Cemetery is where James is buried. The stones were made of limestone and were very weak. Vandals broke up my gggfather's headstone and William's. I may have the only near intact picture of William's. William and James are from a big family that migrated to the US in 1798 about. Spent time in Penn. and then went to Indiana. Now the this clan of Kerr's in the New World used Karr as their last name very often because Immigration wrote it that way based on their pronunciation of their last name. I have immigration papers. William looks like he died in October 10, 1855 using the name William Karr, not Kerr. My gggfather did the same. I have a picture of the headstone and it is broken in half sadly. I have personally been to the cemetery and have a lot of pictures. If you want I can send you stuff on the Kerr's/Karr's/Carr's. Email. Yes in and around the area, these people used any one of the 3 last names. I have seen all 3 in the same cemetery that is right next door to Mt. Pleasant.

I went ahead and posted the headstone for William. You can see it on ONE NAME STUDY KERR
